Peripheral Neuropathy & Nerve Pain: How Acupuncture Can Help

Understanding the Problem

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the peripheral nerves—often in the hands, feet, or limbs—leading to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness. It can arise from various causes, including diabetes, injury, infections like shingles, and neurological conditions such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. One of the biggest challenges for people with peripheral neuropathy is that conventional treatments often offer limited relief. Many find themselves in what we call the “give-up zone.”

The Role of Acupuncture

Acupuncture offers a unique approach. Even within the evidence-based medicine paradigm, acupuncture has been shown to influence the nervous system, improving nerve tone, modulating pain signals, and activating the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) response.

At Bodhi Health, we regularly treat clients with:

  • Diabetic peripheral neuropathy

  • Post-herpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles)

  • Cervical radiculopathy (nerve-related neck pain)

  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

  • Nerve-related pain misdiagnosed as muscular strain

Treatment Tools & Techniques

Depending on the presentation, we use combinations of:

  • Traditional acupuncture to stimulate nerve pathways

  • Electroacupuncture, our strongest form of treatment, which acts like a targeted TENS machine

  • Gua sha for superficial nerve stimulation

  • Laser acupuncture for deep tissue activation

These methods aim to “wake up” the nerve cells, improve blood flow, and support muscle tissue that’s losing tone and strength due to poor innervation.

Chinese Medicine Perspective

From a traditional perspective, the Spleen and Pancreas (considered a functional unit in Chinese Medicine) are closely tied to muscle health. We often support these systems herbally when treating diabetic neuropathy, especially when the feet begin to feel dry, ropey, or weak. The goal is to nourish the tissues, improve circulation, and stimulate the body’s own healing processes.

Working in Collaboration

Many of our clients also see chiropractors. While chiropractic care works on spinal alignment and nerve signaling, acupuncture supports the neuromuscular system from a blood, fluid, and organ-based approach. When combined, these two systems can offer powerful support for people navigating nerve-related issues.

Why Consider Acupuncture for Nerve Pain?

Because acupuncture works with the body’s own self-regulating systems, it’s an option worth trying—especially for those who’ve already explored other treatments. It’s not a miracle cure, but for many, it provides relief, better function, and a sense of hope.
